January was not the first month to see increased preliminary orders. In December 2017, orders were 77 percent higher than the same time period in 2016. This lead to a 77 percent surge in sales for the entire year of 2017.
Crunching the Numbers
290,000 Class 8 trucks, or semi-trucks, were ordered during 2017. In 2016, that number was just 164,000. Truck orders passed 30,000 each month from October through December. The main manufacturers of trucks in the United States (Daimler AG, Navistar International Corp, PACCAR, and Volvo AB) saw the greatest gains as a result of the recent boom.
What's to Come?
Avery Vise believes that if the spot market remains robust, sales will continue at this high rate. FTR has projected that the spot market will continue to grow through 2018, but at a less extreme rate. They believe that rates will taper off toward the end of 2018, or in early 2019.
Reliability of FTR
FTR has been conducting research in freight transportation for more than two decades. Their forecasters are award winning and incredibly consistent. The forecasting done by FTR has been used by companies throughout the transportation business to plan in advance and save on costs.
