Staying in Touch While on the Road

Being away from home is one of the most difficult parts of being a big rig driver. Your job is to keep those wheels rolling but it doesn't mean you don't feel like you're missing out on family times. It doesn't have to be that way thanks to modern technology and a few creative ideas to stay in touch.

  • There's Always the Phone - Take advantage of all the smart aspects of your smartphone. Use it often. Teenagers are especially comfortable with text messaging. Download one of these apps for video calling. Seeing your face can be reassuring and you seeing theirs, priceless.
  • Photo Journey - Take the family along for the ride by taking photos of the scenery along the way and regularly sending it to them. It's a great way to share. Keep the photos so you can tell stories to go with them when you return.
  • Social Media - It seems like everyone is on Facebook or Instagram these days and truck drivers can use these platforms and others to share their driving experiences. It's an easy way to have some fun together even though you're apart. You can exchange photos, talk in real time and just stay connected.
  • Watch TV Together - Tune in to a favorite family program and watch it together. It's a perfect way to feel at home even if you're not. You can download one of these long-distance movie apps to watch a movie or listen to music with your spouse after the kids go to bed.
  • Make a Map - The family can keep track of your travels with this clever interactive map of the United States. It's not only a great way to learn geography, the kids will love knowing which state you're in. They can use bits of ribbon or tacks to follow your progress.
