Truck driving jobs are in demand. To become a truck driver, you will study, train, and test for the Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as found on AllTrucking.com. In the classroom, you will learn about the trucking industry: "logs, federal motor carriers regulations, loading and unloading, and road signs and laws." The hands-on segment will give you the training to gain your behind-the-wheel confidence and skills you will need to safely drive the big rigs with "maneuvering, starting and parking, truck controls, local and highway driving, and truck inspections."
Again found on AllTrucking.com, you learn that additional time and training will give you a competitive edge over CDL-only drivers. Depending on your state's requirements, you will see the additional studies and tests you must take to learn about these additional "endorsement and restrictions," as found on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
As you find on Smart Trucking, taking the time to get those extra endorsements will give you more job opportunities. One opportunity is higher paying driving positions. If you're an owner-operator with these endorsement certifications plus a reputable history, you can be highly marketable.
As the Smart Trucking article points out, becoming an owner-operator does have "more risk and responsibility." "However, the pay off can be profitable if it's done correctly and operated as a true business." Be sure to read the Smart Trucking article to become an owner-operator in 2019.
Breaking into the trucking industry takes dedication. If your dream is to become an owner-operator, it also takes a financial investment. Many new owner-operators start their trucking business with used trucks.
