5 Tips To Help Truck Drivers Live Healthier

It's no secret that truck driving can take its toll on one's health. Sitting inside of the cab of a truck all day with little physical activity and not getting up to stretch as often as you may like can cause its own host of concerns. Moreover, the trend of gas station food and extra-large Slurpee drinks can add on the calories, and pack on the pounds. Moreover, driving for 11-12 hours a day for days on end can cause mental stress and headaches. 

In the end, the point is that many truck drivers would love to be healthier while continuing to do their livelihood. The following are a few great tips to help drivers who wish to stay healthy yet want to continue in the lucrative trucking business: 

  • Drink Water: Rather than sipping Slurpees on the road get one of those 1/2 gallon trucker bottles and slurp water on the road. This helps you avoid any health-related risks that come with dehydration. Drink at least half of your body weight in pounds in ounces of water each day. So 150-pound driver should drink 75 ounces of water per day, minimum. More is great! That's about 8 cups (64 ounces) for a grown woman and 10 1/2 cups (85 ounces) for a man.

 

  • Pack Your Fruits & Veggies: Pack fruits and veggies in a lunchbox, cooler, or other device and eat them while on the road. Instead of just stopping at gas stations or convenience stores for hamburgers, hot dogs, hot pretzels, chips, or other salt-and-fat laden snacks, eat vegetables. Allow yourself one fast-food meal a day or per trip and the rest are fruits and veggies. Aim for 5-10 servings of fruits and veggies combined per day. It will trim the waistline and calories out of your diet.

 

  • Take A Multivitamin: Taking a multivitamin each day can help you ensure you get in any nutrients that you are missing otherwise in your daily diet. Focus on vital nutrients like Vitamin C at a minimum.

 

  • Drink A "Green Shake": If you have never taken a green shake before, start with a small dose and up it daily. Add 8 ounces of water or more and a green protein powder mix. Blend it together for a shake that will provide not only vitamins and minerals but daily fiber. It's a great way to get in your extra nutrients as a truck driver or anyone with a more sedentary job. 

 

  • Destress/Relax At The End Of Your Day: Find a way to relax a little bit when you are done driving for the day, even if it's reading a good book or meditating for a few moments before going to sleep. Unwinding will help you rest easy and sleep more steadily.
