The Hybrid Approach to the Trucking Industry

The increasing push for lower carbon emissions has created a shockwave through many U.S. industries, and trucking is no different. These calls are showing no sign of slowing down. For example, in California, a bill has been put forward calling for a reduction in diesel emissions of 80% by 2050. Future regulations like these require a complete rethinking of the industry and how companies perform. We have seen some of these possible changes with the rise of electrification, most notably from Tesla as well as current industry leaders like Volvo. Another less popular but equally viable strategy though is hybridization.

This is the plan being put forward by Thomas Healy, founder, and CEO of Hyliion. At only the age of 26, Healy's company has created a hybrid system that claims to help reduce fuel and emissions by up to 15%. The 6X4HE system runs very similar to the hybrid systems we have become used to in our cars. While travelling downhill, slowing down or stopping, the system harvests electricity that can then be used to aid in climbing elevation or accelerating from a stop. Helping to always improve efficiency, each system is controlled by a data analyzing program that processes information to make the system better over time.  

One of the most important aspects of the Hyliion Hybrid System is its completely modular design. The parts required for the system are compatible not only with new model trucks but can be installed on older trucks that are already in use. While the full electrified strategies require a complete rebuilding of the industry, the 6X4HE system can simply be installed onto the current supply of vehicles making for an easier transition.
